Why it is important to correctly commission your boat for summer

posted on Feb 24

With the beautiful, warm weather the northwest has experienced lately, you may already be thinking about when you’ll be able to get your boat back on the water. Even though it’s only February, spring will be here before you know it! When the time comes, you’ll want to be ready for that first warm weekend.

However, just like properly winterizing your boat is so important, bringing your boat out of its winter lay-up is equally important. Now is the time to fix any problems and care for any routine maintenance, so no matter when summer officially starts, you’ll be ready to hit the water.

When you commission your boat for summer, you want to take care of basic maintenance, such as oil changes, replacing or changing filters, seawater pump impellers on main engines and generators. You’ll also need to check all fluids, gasoline, batteries and even your lights to make sure everything is still in proper condition.

Now is also the time to flush fresh water systems and check demand pumps.  Now would even be a good time to check trailer tires and breaks, to make sure you’re safe on the roadway, and in the water.

There is a lot to do when readying your boat for summer, and it can be extremely easy to forget something. Skipping a crucial step could be detrimental for you boat’s maintenance, and your safety. As always, we want to remind you that this is a job for a knowledgeable boating professional.
